Protecting

bonesThere is something tremulous just under the surface of my skin.

Something so delicate and fragile that I’m afraid to move, or laugh,

or even cry because if I do the spine will collapse.

Everything will fall apart.

I will splinter into a million fearful pieces of bone,

float off into the universe never to be heard from again.

Except for these pitiful sobs that rise up in my heart,

against my will,

and hover gently in the minds of those I’ve loved.
